2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group Fundraising Appeal

Chandler Garvey was approached by Gary Grant, Founder & Executive Chairman of The Entertainer, to see if we wanted to make a donation to the Jubilee Hall fund; a project that he and his business have been supporting. When we heard more about the project we were delighted to help, especially as Alan Chandler was a cub and a scout within this group.

Here’s a bit of history regarding the property and details of how other businesses can help this worthwhile cause.

2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group was registered at Imperial Headquarters of The Boy Scouts Association on 8th November 1923. As time passed, Scouters decided it was time to acquire their own premises to meet, so a hut fund was started. Land was soon made available and work started; the building made of timber and metal was erected by Rodwell of Ballinger and the Scouters, Scouts and Parents decorated the inside and outside ready for its grand opening in 1929. Sadly this hall was destroyed by a fire on 19th September 1964, however Scouts are always prepared and from that day it was decided that 2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group would have the finest hall possible!

Many fundraising events were held to raise cash to build a new hall. The build was finished in 1966 and the hall was named the Jubilee Hall. To this day the Jubilee Hall and 2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group is active and thriving! The Jubilee Hall served the Scouts and local community for just over 50 years and much had changed in building standards over that time – its green credentials, space layout, usage needs, car parking and access.

The Scout Group purchased the adjacent field in 2017 which enabled them to look at the bigger picture – they had open space to play and camp, more space to consider car parking and an opportunity to look at the Scout Group and community needs for the next generations! The Scout Group considered the 50 year old Jubilee Hall’s layout, the need for major refurbishment, the growing waiting list of young people wanting to experience Scouting, and the inability to accommodate more than one activity at a time. It was decided that a new hall was to be built and in August 2019 the build started.

On 19th April 2021 after 18 months away, 2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group returned to their new premises on Rectory Hill, Amersham. The new Jubilee Hall is the third generation hall built on the same site bequeathed to 2nd Amersham on the Hill Scout Group in 1948.

The first meeting inside the hall was delayed by a few months due to the third Covid-19 Lockdown in the UK; however, with restrictions partially lifted, the Milan Cub Pack stepped through the doors on 19th April and a new chapter began at the Jubilee Hall. The new Jubilee Hall has modern catering facilities, safer access to storage for camping equipment, with toilet and washing facilities for the camping field. The building itself has embraced the modern energy efficient heating and lighting whilst improving its green credentials with improved installations. A lot of thought has gone into the new hall, enabling it to be fit for purpose for the next 50 years – a community facility we can rightly be proud of.

The Scout Group launched a fundraising appeal to fund the new Jubilee Hall that will serve both the Scouts and the local community. The new Jubilee Hall has cost the Scout Group approximately £2.06 million and the Scout Group are delighted with their fundraising so far achievements so far. However, they now need the urgent support to settle the remaining shortfall of £165,000.
