High Wycombe: Progress, Pride and the Power of Place

June 20th, 2025

White Hart Street ongoing rejuvenation

High Wycombe is changing, and now the signs are undeniable.  The White Hart Street works, long anticipated and not without their bumps are finally nearing completion.  The difference is already striking.  A previously tired part of town now feels purposeful and inviting, an encouraging signal of progress.

If a place looks better, it feels better. While not a formal planning principle, this widely accepted idea captures the spirit of good placemaking.  Urban renewal expert Jane Jacobs spoke of “eyes on the street” and vibrant spaces promoting safety and connection. Urban architect Christopher Alexander showed how order and beauty shape how we experience places.  When a town invests in itself, it builds momentum.

There is still a need for faster progress in delivery initiatives for the town centre, but overall, High Wycombe is in resonably good shape.  As a commercial property expert, we see many of the fundamentals in place, despite ongoing challenges.

Recent political changes may help.  Steve Broadbent’s appointment as Leader of Buckinghamshire Council presents a chance to work together more effectively.  Having collaborated with Steve over many years, I know he is open, thoughtful and committed to delivering positive change.  His acceptance speech rightly highlighted the need for collaoroation, and I look forward to his leadership with real optimism.

Likewise, Sue Hynard’s appointment as Chief Executive of HIgh Wycombe BIDCo is a very exciting development.  She has big shoes to fill but brings energy, experience and a clear commitment to the town.

New development alone doesn’t ensure success but when places are made better people respond.  With renewed leadership, civic pride and visible progress in places like White Hart Street, we can look to the future of High Wycombe with confidence.
